A Peach Of A Food Allergy

It's not always a great idea to just be on auto-pilot

I'm basically a creature of habit, especially so when it comes to my diet, as over the years I have developed quite a lot of food allergies. Once I find something that 'works' (meaning tastes good and doesn't make me sick) I tend to stick with it. Plus it makes it very easy in deciding what I want to buy in the grocery store, especially when it's my husband who is doing the shopping. Kind of like being on auto-pilot.

Eating something that I am technically allergic to but was fine (eating a stone fruit basically every day for about three weeks, sometimes eating two small ones at a time), until my body said ENOUGH! Which made me sick for five days. Not a recommended weight loss plan and thank goodness for McConnell's Vanilla Ice Cream and Whole Food Organic Morning-Os!

Sometimes enough really is enough

Usually if I try to eat something that I shouldn't, I'll know about it right away at the port of entry (my mouth) because I have what's called Oral Allergy Syndrome. Occasionally something will get past my mouth and as I'm swallowing I realize 'whoops... shouldn't have eaten that!' (case in point, watermelon) but nothing like that happened when I was eating the peaches. And the apricots.

I guess my body was quietly building up to a full blown STOP!! Enough is enough! Apparently the idiom "Too much of a good thing" CAN be true, in some cases.

Remember the why

In hindsight, it seems pretty obvious to not eat something from the same food group everyday if you are technically allergic to it. There are so many other foods that I eat Every. Single. Day. that I forget to be careful sometimes.

I think that's something to keep in mind, in business or in day-to-day life, and that is to not just go on auto-pilot and forget about the 'why'. Peaches are not in season for very long and apricots are only in season for a few weeks, even though I am able to over-buy and freeze them to be able to stretch the eating season into the Fall.

My 'why' was that I enjoy eating peaches and apricots. Also, that they are only in season for a short time. And, they are healthy.

But my other 'why' is "Why would I eat something everyday that I'm allergic to?" Hmmm... because they taste good or because a person can only eat so many raspberries and blueberries in a day?

My allergist tells me that if a particular food bothers me, to just try it again next year when it comes back in season.

Okay, on to trying apples and pears... oh, the joys of food allergies.
