Last year, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Debi Derryberry (the voice of Jimmy Neutron) as part of a team for San Carlos Children's Theater. She was just as warm, engaging and knowledgeable 'in-person' as she comes through in her book VOICE-OVER 101: How to Succeed as a Voice Actor .
I purchased Debi's book after hearing her speak and coach students at a voice-over event. I refer to it often, as it is broken down into easy-to-understand chapters, where you can quickly find answers to questions you might have about voice acting. Although, it is written in such an engaging way, that even if you have no intention of ever becoming a voice actor, it is still very entertaining and informative, and gives an insight into all that goes on behind the scenes in the world of VO.
The book is written in such a way that someone just thinking about getting into voice overs could use this book as their guide all the way through to getting signed with agents, joining the union and everything in between. Debi talks about tips and techniques, delves into the most popular VO genres, and also addresses the business side of the profession, such as training, recording demos, what should be included in a resume. and also the vast world of marketing.
My favorite parts of the book are the little tips and tricks that only a seasoned professional would know, and only someone who truly cares about furthering the profession would take the time to pass on.
I highly recommend reading VOICE-OVER 101: How to Succeed as a Voice Actor. I guarantee that no matter where you are in your voice acting career, or even if you are just a fan of Jimmy Neutron and want to learn more about the mind and voice that drives that character, give the book a look! You'll be glad you did.
